Don’t Let the Sun Go Down
Scripture Reading: Ephesians 4:26-27, 31-32
26 And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil.
31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Reflection:
Anger itself isn't the sin. Everyone gets angry, and Paul assumes you will. The danger is what you do with it. Ephesians says not to let the sun go down on your anger, because unattended anger gives the devil a foothold. Think about how that works. You lie awake replaying what was said, rehearsing what you should have said back, and soaking in how unfair it was. Each replay presses the foothold a little deeper.
Sunday's challenge was simple, but not easy: name it. Say, "I am angry, and here is why."
Then ask what is really under your skin. Sometimes it is the offense, and sometimes it is pride or old hurt. Bring it to God tonight, before the sun sets, instead of carrying it to bed. He can handle your honesty, and He would rather hear it from you than watch it harden. Then ask Him for tenderness.
Application Question: What is your anger really about underneath, and what would it look like to bring it to God before tonight ends?
