A Root You Didn’t Plant

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 12:14-15

14 Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. 15 Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.

Reflection:

This past Sunday I shared how Joseph's brothers let bitterness grow into hatred, and we saw Joseph choose another way.

Nobody wakes up planning to become bitter. It starts small, like a car pulling out in front of you on a dark road, or a word from someone you trusted that stung more than you expected. You shrug it off, but later you replay it. Then you replay it again. Hebrews warns about a root of bitterness, and roots grow where you can't see them. That is why they are so dangerous. Joseph's brothers show us the end of that road. Their resentment kept growing until one of them said out loud, "Let us kill him." Sunday reminded us that bitterness is hardened anger with an unforgiving heart, and it steals the peace Jesus wants to give you. Today, don't rush to fix anything. Just ask God to show you what has been quietly growing in you. Be honest. He already knows, and He is always gentle with honest people.

Application Question: What small frustration or hurt have you been replaying lately, and what might it grow into if you leave it alone?
