Sunshine on a Cloudy Day

Do you find joy on a cloudy day?

Back in 1964, the Temptations song “My Girl” kicked off with, “I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day.” The song is a love song about how a guy feels about his girl, and how her presence makes everything better!

Life is tough. There will be periods when we struggle to find peace. On a cloudy day, it’s actually normal to feel sad! That feeling is a common response to reduced sunlight that directly disrupts our brain's chemical balance and internal clock.

While there’s a medical reason we are sadder on a cloudy day, there’s a spiritual reason too.

Jeremiah wrote,

“Why does my suffering keep going? It feels like your help is as unpredictable as a brook that dries up in the summer?” (Jeremiah 15:18).

Like Jeremiah, we can focus too much on life’s struggles. When we do that, we miss out on God’s peace. Instead, think about the wonderful things God has done, is doing, and will do.

If you desire sunshine on a cloudy day, seek God. Those who sought God during difficult times discovered His presence and peace.

Paul wrote,

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus“ (Philippians 4:6-7, NLT).

Focus on God’s blessings and enjoy His sunshine … even on a cloudy day.
