As a young teen I remember being alone in our house.  I don’t know where everyone was; I just don’t remember anyone being there.  We only got 2 TV stations back then: CBS & PBS.  The only thing on was a Billy Graham crusade.  At that time I did not go to church.  I believed in God, Jesus, heaven, hell, the devil, and all that stuff.  I had read the Bible some.  You could have called me “God-friendly,” but I was not a Christ-follower.

Anyway, I didn’t want to listen to Billy Graham (nor did I want to watch anything on PBS).  Before I could turn the TV off, Dr. Graham said something that scared the living daylights out of me: “Jesus said, ‘But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.'”  I freaked out!

I got out our BIG family Bible (the kind that door-t0-door salemen used to sale that weigh about 100 pounds and fill up an entire dining room table that have places to put your entire family tree in them with loads of religious pictures).  I wanted to see for myself these words of Jesus.  I could not find them.  I did know where to look . . . Old or New Testament.  Finally, I gave up and concluded that Dr. Graham might have forgetten Jesus’ exact words or changed them to scare people like me.

gospel sermon seriesWhat I did not understand then, I do now.  My feeling of “terror” was the Holy Spirit letting me know that all was not well between me and God.  He was convicting me of my need for God and was pointing me in the right direction.  But, I let Satan win that day by refusing to listen to God.

Thankfully, I eventually listened to God and all is well now.  I shared my story (and left out some stuff) because I want you come to church for the next 3 weeks as I talk about the gospel.  If you come, as the late Paul Harvey said, “Now you know the rest of the story.”

By the way, the verse that Dr. Graham quoted is found in Matthew 10:33 (KJV).
