Every time I went to Six Flags in Atlanta I stood in awe of those brave souls that paid extra money for a ride on the Sky Coaster. You allow yourself to be strapped into a safety vest, get pulled up 10 stories, pull a rip-cord, and then free fall at 50 mph toward the ground before swinging around for several minutes.

I wanted to do it, but I was afraid … until three years ago. I mustered up the courage and took the plunge with my youngest daughter, Katie. As we made our way up toward the top I hoped that the cable would not break. It was a little unnerving. When we reached the top and got the word to pull the cord, I did it! At that moment all my fears went away. It was so much fun that I’ve ridden it 4 more times since.

King David wrote, “When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 56:3-4, HCSB).

When David wrote those words he had been seized by the Philistines (an enemy of Israel). If the fellow who killed Goliath, who was a Philistine, with a stone and slingshot, wrote that when he is afraid, then I have feel like I have permission to fear things at times too.

Our fear could be any of the following:

  • fear of losing a relationship, possessions, or a job
  • fear of failure
  • fear of rejection
  • fear of unknown things such as sickness, the economy, or death

David wrote that when you are afraid, put your trust in God and praise Him. Remember all that God has done in the past. Think about all that He has created. Meditate on His knowledge and power. Focus on His love for you. And, maybe you should avoid those scary rides at Six Flags.

I did this, too. The experience was awesome! I did it on impulse, with two teenage girls. Just leaped in with minimal trepidation and anxiety. This approach, I think, could exemplify God’s direction to us to lead a cheerful, open-hearted life. I didn’t employ my usual analysis-paralysis approach to decision-making and was rewarded with an exciting experience that left me and my young friends with a wonderful memory. And…. I want to do it again!! I don’t have to get paralyzed with fear now, I’ve (literally) already jumped right in!
