With You In the Waiting Room

Scripture Reading: Isaiah 43:1-2

1 But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you. O Israel, the one who formed you says, “Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. 2 When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.

Reflection:
Here is what the cupbearer could never give Joseph: presence. Yet Scripture says, again and again, that the Lord was with Joseph, even in the prison. God makes you that same promise. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. Notice it says when, not if. The waiting room has water and fire in it, and God never promises to skip them. He promises to stand beside you in them. A mother may forget her nursing child, Isaiah says, but He will not forget you. You are engraved on the palms of His hands. When prayers seem to meet silence, it is tempting to conclude that God has stepped out of the room. He hasn’t. Silence is not absence. Today, pause three times and whisper, “You are here.” Let that simple truth settle into your heart, especially in the moments when you feel least sure of it.

Application Question: When has God felt silent to you, and what do you know about His character that stays true even then?
