Not By My Strength
Scripture Reading: Zechariah 4:6–10
“Then he said to me, ‘This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’”
“Then another message came to me from the Lord: ‘Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. 10 Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.’”
Reflection:
You've probably tried the sheer-willpower version of faith before. White-knuckle it, read a little more, pray a little harder, be a little nicer, and hope it adds up to spiritual growth. It doesn't work for long, because it was never meant to. Zechariah told a discouraged leader named Zerubbabel that a mountain-sized obstacle would become level ground, not by might, not by power, but by God's Spirit. That word wasn't just for a rebuilding project in ancient Jerusalem. It's for the rebuilding happening in you.
Making disciples, loving Jesus with your whole heart, breaking free of routine, none of it happens because you finally muster enough determination.
It happens because you stop relying on your own strength and start depending on His. Where have you been quietly running on empty, trying to generate power you were never meant to produce alone? Ask God for His strength today, and mean it.
Application Question: Where in your life right now are you relying on your own effort instead of asking God for His power — and what would change if you handed that area over to Him today?
