IMG00098Rhonda and I had forgotten about Japenese Beetles while living in Florida. These guys eat a lot and can quickly destroy a landscape! We were attacked while away on vacation earlier this summer. After getting back our Knockout Rose had been devoured. There was some left, but it looked really bad.

We treated it to protect it from the beetles and waited for the little bugs to move on. A few days later Rhonda went out with the pruning shears and cut away all of the damaged and dead branches. Within a couple of weeks the plant sprang back to life! It grew by leaps and bounds. The beautiful blooms returned. All was well once again.

As Rhonda and I were talking with J. R. and Jeanne after church this past Sunday, I saw that rose bush. God reminded me of a profound spiritual truth . . . he “prunes” Christians. Jesus said, “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more” (John 15:1-2, NLT).

God will “prune” you so you will be more productive in his kingdom. It may not be comfortable, but it is necessary. When the testing comes, whether in your life or your church, accept and grow from it!

That scripture is so true in many ways. A lot of times we want everything to go smoothly however, living a Christ-like life, brings many challenges. Challenges which enhance our relationships with others, grow us individually and spiritually. Christ says in James 1:2-4: “Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations. Knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience. And let patience have its perfect work that ye may be perfect and entire lacking in nothing.” We are guaranteed trial and temptations in our life but its purpose is to prove our faith and lack nothing. Pruning is just that I believe, pruning us so that we can grow abundantly in and through Christ Jesus. Praise God for the pruning He has done in my life, without it, I wouldn’t be who I am.
