mom and dad’s wedding pictureMy parents are celebrating the BIG 5-0 this weekend.  They have been married for 50 years!  That is an elite club to be in.  I’m proud of them and honored to be their son.  Both of them taught me so much (and still teach me a thing or two).  It’s not easy to reach this milestone.  A lot of couples don’t make it because of death.  Others don’t because of divorce.  For those that do, I shout out: “Way to go!”  My dad’s parents celebrated 50 years of marriage.  Not long after, my grandmother passed away from cancer.  My mom’s parents didn’t make it to 50 years.  My grandfather died in a car accident just a few hundred yards from his house (I was around 5 years old and in the truck with him).  Had that not happened, I believe they would have made it.

The family is headed to Unicoi State Park and Lodge this weekend to celebrate.  We’re going to have a blast looking at pictures and telling some stories.  I’m going to officiate their vow renewal service (that will be cool).  Of course, there will be food.  Our girls and Matt wish they could be there.  It’s too far from NYC and Orlando to make the trip for a couple of days (this close to Christmas).  Nick won’t make it either (he’s serving our country in Iraq; talk about a long way from home).  Everyone else is going to be there: me and Rhonda; my brother and sisters (and their kids); and the great-grandkids.

If you’re married, I hope you make it to 50 years.  And I hope you’re happy about it.  I don’t know about you, but life would not be as much fun without Rhonda by my side.  We’ve only got 21 more years to go before we celebrate 50 years of marriage!
